Renting

Spiral was founded in 1995 as a healing and therapeutic space for both clients and therapists. The centre is jointly run by Aleine Ridge and Maria North, who take financial, policy-making and administrative responsibility. We are committed to open dialogue, consultation and participation

We have two beautiful second floor consulting rooms: a counselling/bodywork room, which can also be used as a group room for up to 10 people, and a smaller therapy room. Additional individual therapy rooms and a larger ground floor group room (for up to 20 people) are available on some evenings and weekends

All renters are qualified, with professional liability insurance and current membership of an appropriate professional organisation

Placements

Voluntary placements at Spiral are open to trainees and qualified therapists wishing to learn about private practice in a holistic and multicultural setting. We are looking for women who resonate with the energy of the centre and who can commit to a placement of at least a year, seeing three clients per week in a morning or afternoon (occasional evening slots are open to qualified therapists). Because some of the client work is likely to be longer-term, applicants will need to have already experienced deep therapeutic journeys of their own

The placement is supported by fortnightly individual supervision, which ensures a great depth of holding and learning. Because we receive no funding, there is a charge for this, at a reasonable private rate

Placement Requirements

considerable depth of personal development

membership of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, or equivalent

professional insurance

commitment to regular counselling or psychotherapy for the duration of the placement

Application Procedure

Please email us first to check if there are any vacancies coming up

If there is a suitable vacancy you would then send or email a relevant CV, and a letter of no more than two A4 pages covering the following:

In what way have you experienced a deep therapeutic journey, and what have you learned about yourself through it?

How does this inform your therapeutic work?

In what way do you work holistically in the therapeutic setting?

What are your strengths and weaknesses as a therapist?

How many client hours have you done to date?

What times are you available for a three hour slot, Mondays to Fridays between 9.30am - 5pm (and evenings if qualified)?

Supervision

Aleine Ridge
Diploma in Integrative Psychosynthesis Counselling with Communication and Counselling Foundation (1993). As a BACP Senior Accredited Counsellor/Psychotherapist (first accredited in 1997), I adhere to their Ethical Framework for Good Practice

I have worked as a counsellor since 1973 and as a psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer since 1990. I co-founded Spiral in 1995 and am co-director here

As well as extensive private practice I have worked in a number of different organisations as a counsellor, psychotherapist, supervisor, trainer or consultant: NHS, Pregnancy Advisory Service, Lesbian Line, London Rape Crisis, Complementary Health Trust, Women and Health, Stress Project, NSPCC, One in Four, MIND, Advance and Angel Drug Project

Having worked with such a diversity of people over a long period of time I work integratively, incorporating client-centred, interpretative and focussed approaches depending on what is most appropriate. A lot of the people I see are dealing with the effects of childhood trauma. The traumas might have been emotional, physical, sexual or spiritual and any of these aspects of self may be affected. I am constantly inspired by the journey of healing, integration and insight which I share with my clients

I work at Spiral on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays
Individuals: £60; group rate by arrangement

Maria North
I hold a Certificate in Integrative and Transpersonal Supervision from the Psychosynthesis and Education Trust (2000), a Diploma in Integrative Psychosynthesis Counselling with the Communication and Counselling Foundation (1994), and an MA in Psychotherapy and Healing with the Society for Psychology and Healing (2006). I also completed a training in Couples Therapy with Re.Vision in 2007. I am a BACP Senior Registered Counsellor/Psychotherapist and Supervisor (first accredited in 1997), a UKCP Registered Psychotherapist (2005), and a UKAHPP Accredited Psychotherapist (2005). I adhere to the codes of ethics of each of these professional bodies. I am a co-director at Spiral, and an experienced trainer

I have been supervising therapists since 1999, working in a variety of contexts, including with individual counsellors and psychotherapists in private practice, those working in schools and Further Education colleges, and those in training on placement at Spiral and elsewhere. I have also worked extensively with groups of counsellors on diploma training courses, and I currently supervise multi-disciplinary groups of volunteer counsellors and complementary therapists

I work from an integration of humanistic, transpersonal and psychodynamic perspectives, giving careful attention to the relational, and to the impact of similarity and difference on therapeutic work. My intention is to help therapists grow into the approach which is right for them. However, this is not at the expense of offering guidance and suggestion, or avoiding issues of good practice. I aim to strike a balance between support and challenge which offers both encouragement and the opportunity for self-knowledge. I place considerable importance on what is learnt in supervision through the countertransference, both that of my supervisees and my own

Sessions for individuals: £55

Certificate in Psychosexual Health
with Cabby Laffy

Oct 2010 - July 2011

one Friday evening and one Saturday, monthly at Spiral

CPD: 150 hours

This training in Integrative Psychosexual Therapy is aimed at practitioners working in the fields of counselling and psychotherapy and/or complementary and alternative medicine. It runs for 10 weekend sessions once a month, offering an opportunity for personal and professional development for those wishing to enhance their work with clients’ psychosexual health issues

Cabby Laffy offers a new model for the understanding of human sexuality and psychosexual health which encompasses the physical, emotional and spiritual, as well as the social and cultural environment. Her course explores clients’ sexual issues in terms of their therapeutic meaning and potential, rather than as ‘dysfunction’. It includes sexual education, information and self help tools. Participants will be enabled to support their clients within a therapeutic relationship to rediscover themselves sexually and develop a more conscious sexual self esteem

The training will include:

• innovative educational material on the physiology and anatomy of sexuality, sensuality and body
awareness

• an exploration of sexual identity, relationship issues, sacred sexuality and desires for a sexual future

• social and cultural aspects of sexuality, including sexual violence, sexual shame, sexual addiction, and sexual health

There will be a strong experiential theme. Through reflective exercises, and small and large group work, participants will explore sexuality issues as individuals, as well as in relationship and in a social and cultural context

Attendance is required for all 10 Saturdays and for each 3-hour monthly Friday evening reflective group. In addition, participants will be expected to work with a study partner, and complete homework and written tasks (minimum 6 hours monthly)

Cabby Laffy has been a facilitator of trainings and workshops since 1991. She also works with individuals and couples, and is a clinical supervisor for complementary health practitioners working in the community. She is a UKCP registered psychotherapist, a UKAHPP accredited psychosexual therapist, and a member of BASRT. She is currently writing a book about psychosexual health. Friday evening groups are facilitated by Aleine Ridge, an experienced supervisor and trainer and a senior BACP accredited counsellor
